HUNTERTON, Ind. — The Warner Family Farm was honored as a finalist in this year’s Indiana Farm Family of the Year competition.
The family grows 600 acres of corn, soybeans, hay, milo, sunflowers, pumpkins and gourds and raises beef cattle, poultry and sheep.
The farm is led by Paul and Teresa Warner, Josh and Kala Warner and family, and Zack and Dawn Warner and family.
Nominator Eric Strater described the family as hard-working.
“On the farm, Zack and Dawn’s daughter has started doing farm tours during the sheep-lambing season and sheep-shearing season to help people understand how the farm is operated and how raising sheep goes,” he said.
“Along with that, they plant sunflowers and have photography sessions in the sunflower field. They are known throughout the county for their photo ops.”
Josh and Kala’s second oldest, Isaac, has been helping on the farm since he could walk. Recently, he saw potential to make the farm efficient by equipping their old equipment with GPS for autosteer capabilities.
“The biggest accomplishment in my opinion would be years ago when Zack and Josh had to run the farm by themselves for harvest, since their father, Paul, had some health issues and could not help out for the fall,” Strater said.
“At the time, the boys were 15 and 17. They handled all the harvest for the year and made do while Paul was getting better from the health issues he had that year.”
The family is committed to keeping their farm around for the next generation.
