Veterans learn about farming through Indiana AgVets

A lavender pruning workshop is held to teach veterans new skills. Indiana AgVets is a project of Hoosier Uplands Economic Development Corporation and AgrAbility. The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides grants to make the program possible.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Indiana AgVets program provides veterans an opportunity to learn about everything from beekeeping to raising cattle.

Through mentorship and training, vets can gain the skills they need to transition from military life to a job in agriculture.

What is it? The Indiana AgVets Certification and Internship Program is an agricultural career training opportunity. The program provides veterans with the opportunity to spend 400 hours on a farm and receive a stipend of $15 an hour.

Vets can also receive free, specialized training in a farm or agricultural business sector they are interested in.

• The program is open to U.S. military veterans or current National Guard or Reserve members, of any service branch, in Indiana and surrounding states.
