Giant flag to fly over Half Century of Progress

Q&A: Neal Lambert

Every day at the Half Century of Progress starts with a flag-raising event, and that flag is the largest flying flag in the United States, an incredible 65 feet tall and 125 feet long.

RANTOUL, Ill. — America’s largest flying flag will be raised each morning of the Half Century of Progress at 8 a.m.

Neal Lambert, a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the United Veterans of America, shared the flag’s story.

Q: Can you tell us the story behind the large flag at the show?

A: We are a veterans’ organization that wants every American to know what sacrifices have been made so that we can live in a free country. The folks in Rantoul asked us to be a part of the Half Century of Progress several years ago. It’s a great way to show patriotism at the event.

Q: What does the flag represent for you and for the Half Century of Progress?

A: I’m a Navy veteran. For me, I want to make sure no one is forgotten and to be proud to be American. There are a lot of proud Americans out there and there are few prouder than the farming community.

Q: How do visitors typically react when they see it for the first time?

A: Most want to be a part of the effort. There are a lot just in awe, and some get emotional.

Q: Are there any special details about its size, installation or care that people might not know?

A: The size of the travel flag is 65 feet tall and 125 feet long, and it weighs about 400 pounds. The one we fly at home on our flagpole is 75 feet tall and 150 feet long. The flagpole itself is 240 feet tall.

Q: What message do you hope people take away when they see the flag at the event?

A: Be proud of who you are.
