From the Pastures: Let’s ‘MAHA’

Hello from Graze-N-Grow. Hooray for “MAHA,” the “Make America Healthy Again” strategy. Sounds like the government finally got something right after all these years trying to convince us to eat junk and be healthy. Statistics have shown for years the decline in health, but corporate greed kept buying off the health officials. Now, however, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and others have put red meat where it belongs. Most farmers knew this anyway, but there are many folks in our country that believed the lie that seed oils are healthy and animal fat wasn’t. That eating Froot Loops is OK, but eggs are taboo. Hopefully, beef and lamb can benefit even while we are already riding high.

Have you followed the lamb market this winter? Just like the cattle market it’s seeing great demand. It’s not too late to get in the game if you want a return on your investment this year on lambs. You will have to wait longer though if you invest in beef. Either way, diversification can help the pain of corn and bean returns. Why not let go of that steering wheel for a while and grab hold of something that appreciates instead of depreciates? Remember, tractors never have baby tractors.

Since we started lambing in December most of the busy chore days are behind us. We still have a few stragglers and the yearlings to come later, but so far it’s been a pretty good lambing season weather-wise. Only that early foot of snow and some mud at times and, oh, that wind. But overall not too bad. Since I’ve conned Ruth into the bottle lamb chores I have it pretty easy for a while.

December was busy with animals going to slaughter. We took in three beef, 10 hogs and five lambs for several of our good customers, mostly from Chicago area, as well as the lambs that were butchered here at home. We are ever grateful for our repeat customers and their positive feedback and we hope this new push for healthy red meat will convince more folks to go find out that good food is good medicine. Just stay away from those Froot Loops. Happy trails.
