PANA, Ill. — Visiting Arpeggio Winery may sound like a step into an Italian vineyard, but it’s really in an old farm barn remodeled into a comfortable tasting room with a commanding view of the surrounding farmland.

From atop one of the morainal ridges running north of Pana, the Swiney family has converted the farm’s barn into a tasting room with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating to enjoy live music and special occasions.

Open since 2015, here’s what else you should know about Arpeggio Winery:

Owners: Mike and Karen Swiney.

Winemaker and grape grower: Karen Swiney makes the wine, while her son, Tim, is the grape grower.

Top selling wines: Duet, a dry red blend made with Norton and Leon Millot; Jazz, a semi-sweet white from Seyval Blanc; and Dolce, a sweet white made with Brianna grapes.

Source of grapes: About 90 percent of the grapes are from their estate vineyard and local vineyards in central Illinois with the rest coming from Missouri and New York.

Grapes grown: The vineyard was started in 2008 and includes Norton and Traminette.

Where: 778 N. U.S. 51, Pana.

Hours: 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday; 1 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and closed Monday and Tuesday.

What's notable: All of the wines are named after musical terms. The tasting menu does not mention the grapes in all of the descriptions, so be sure to ask what grapes are in the wine and where they were grown. Beer, sangria and soft drinks also are available. And look for pictures of the barn in the tasting room.
