Henderson: An admiration for farming and rural America

Our national food production and healthcare system and capabilities have never been more tested or more visibly important to the fundamental wellbeing of our country and our people.

This past summer, when I decided to run for Congress, I did so because as a registered nurse, businesswoman, small farm owner and having lived and worked in the 5th District for 30 years, I felt I had a lot to offer at this period in time.

Having raised two children that are now on their own and busy with their own careers and lives, I knew that I had more to offer and I really wanted to apply my nursing background, my business experience and my love for farming and animals for the betterment of Indiana’s 5th District that has been so wonderful to me and my family.

What I didn’t know and certainly couldn’t envision is how the world would change during my journey for Congress. Coronavirus has brought about changes that are making us focus immediately on our current health system and our food production system. As countless people have mentioned, the timing and need for my training, experience and background couldn’t be more relevant.

As a trusted nurse, I’ve always enjoyed caring for people. I take my vow of providing compassionate care for patients very seriously. As a businesswoman, starting two successful companies, one in health care and one in agriculture, I found great pleasure working with customers to deliver effective health and food solutions.

For the past several years, my focus has been largely in agriculture and running our small farm. Growing up in central Iowa as a daughter of a banker who specialized in ag and farm lending, I’ve always had an admiration for farming and rural America. This appreciation has continued in my adult life through affiliation with agriculture businesses, farming and love for animals.

As often is the case in life’s journey, my call to serve is becoming very clear. I was born and raised in the heartland of America. I’ve raised my family, started businesses and built my American dream from the ground up with hard work, determination and spirit. It is in my heart and every fiber of my being to preserve the American Dream for our next generation and generations to come.

This Midwestern girl was “American Made” and a proud Hoosier. I look forward to earning your support and representing the people of Indiana’s 5th District.

Editor’s note: Originally slated for May 5, Indiana’s primary was rescheduled to June 2 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Twenty candidates filed to run in Indiana’s 5th Congressional District primary. On the Republican side, there are 15 candidates, making it the most contested congressional race on the ballot. The district stretches from the northern portion of Indianapolis to the city of Marion and includes all of Hamilton County.
