Every generation has seen the countryside change. My grandparents saw tractors replace horses. My parents embraced hybrid seed and larger equipment. I’ve watched agriculture evolve with biotechnology, GPS guidance, drones and precision farming. Change has always been part of rural America.
Another change is knocking on the door. A data center is a large, windowless building housing servers that process the information behind everything from online banking and streaming movies to artificial intelligence.
At first, it seems like an easy decision. A technology company wants to invest hundreds of millions, sometimes billions, of dollars in a rural community.
Local governments see new tax revenue. Businesses anticipate more customers during construction. Communities hope the investment signals a brighter future. Who wouldn’t welcome that?
But rural Americans have always understood that every decision involving the land and its stewardship deserves careful thought.
For many of us whose roots run deep on a family farm, land isn’t just an asset. It provides food, supports wildlife, filters water and tells the story of generations who have cared for it. Once farmland is gone, it’s usually gone for good.
Data centers require a lot of electricity, and many rely on significant quantities of water for cooling. As artificial intelligence expands, those demands will only grow.
Rural electric cooperatives and utilities are already evaluating how to meet future needs while maintaining reliable service for the farms, homes and businesses they already serve.
Although data centers represent enormous investments, they don’t necessarily bring thousands of long-term jobs. Unlike a manufacturing facility or food processing plant, these operations often employ a small staff after construction is complete.
Does that mean rural communities should say no? I don’t think it’s that simple.
Agriculture has never been afraid of innovation. Farmers were early adopters of computers, GPS technology, precision agriculture and automation because those tools helped them become more efficient and better stewards of the land. Technology has strengthened agriculture in countless ways.
The question isn’t whether technology belongs in rural America. It’s whether each project fits the community where it’s proposed.
I’m not anti-technology, and I’m not anti-progress. I know that every time I stream a movie, use online banking, send an email, ask an AI tool a question, upload a photo, use a smartphone app or visit a company’s website, I am relying on data centers somewhere to process that information. I understand why the world needs data centers and why some communities welcome investment.
These projects deserve careful consideration. Does it make sense for the local economy? Can the electric grid support it? Will water resources remain sustainable? Will there be noise pollution for neighbors?
Is this truly the best use of the land? And, most importantly, will the benefits still matter 30 or 40 years from now?
Rural America has never stood still. Farmers and rural communities have always adapted to change.
But not every project belongs in every community. Sometimes the right idea is simply in the wrong place.
