Langreck: Off the beaten track

When someone says they like to travel, it usually means to another country or to states known as travel destinations. When I say I like to travel, it usually means I like to travel throughout Indiana and visit the hidden gems that the state has to offer.

I recently had the opportunity to go up to Chesterton and go to the dunes. I have been to the dunes a number of times, but my husband, who has lived and grown up in Indiana his whole life, had never been to the dunes, and I thought it was about time he saw them.

Even though I have seen them before, every time I see the large sand dunes in the Indiana Dunes State Park, I am amazed by the sheer beauty of the giant sand dunes that you can climb to top of. However, this time I think age has caught up with me because they are a lot harder and steeper to climb than they were 10 years ago.

The sheer beauty of the giant sand dunes is breathtaking. My husband decided to climb to the top to get pictures and have the experience of saying he climbed a sand dune.

I tried to climb up behind him, but it was super windy and I was having trouble getting my foot in the sand, so I sat down on the dune instead and looked at the beautiful shoreline.

Although it was pretty cold and definitely not a day for swimming in the lake because it was windy and there were 7-foot waves, it was still pretty to watch the waves crash into the shore.

The dunes are just one of the many hidden gems throughout the state — and I hope to travel to many more.
