From the Fields: Variability hinders a bumper corn crop

I’m starting to do cover crop orders for seed right now. This is the prime time. We got all of our pricing and our special truckload deals on cereal rye with Pro Harvest. So, I’ve been out trying to get lined up with everybody, because it’s time right now to order the cover crop seed for this fall.

It’s getting dry again. We went from drought to a month of flood in June to drought in July again. It’s getting dry — but, knock on wood, everything of mine and everything around here is looking good.

The corn still has a lot of variability in it. It’s not going to be a bumper crop at all. The soybeans have really liked the dry July now. They’ve really taken off and surprisingly the soybeans are looking good.

The beans weren’t very happy in June, but it seems like they came out of it. What didn’t have water standing on it, didn’t flood and didn’t kill them, it seems like what was able to stay alive has really taken off now and is doing good.
