From the Fields: Crops need rain after planting

Soybean planting on Wessels' Family Farm started on April 25 with a field of seed beans. Brandon Wessels checks on the emergence of the plants on the farm in DeKalb County in northern Illinois.

We had moisture from all the rain we got before planting started and since then the rain has cut off, so we have been dry. I am not concerned yet, but we could definitely use some rain.

We put our seeds in moisture and we planted at our ideal planting depth. The soils were colder, but our first soybeans are out of the ground. I have not done a stand count yet to see how well they are established. Our first and second sweet corn plantings are up, as well.
