WASHINGTON — Seven Indiana counties had triple-digit winter wheat yield averages in 2025.
Data on individual counties was made available in early March through the Quick Stats website tool from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Indiana’s winter wheat averaged 89 bushels per acre, producing 21.36 million bushels on 240,000 harvested acres.
Hamilton County wheat averaged 109.4 bushels per acre across 1,170 harvested acres, from 1,300 planted acres, for total production of 128,000 bushels.
Montgomery County winter wheat growers harvested an average of 104 bushels per acre. The county harvested 2,500 acres, from 3,200 planted acres, producing 260,000 bushels.
With an average of 103.8 bushels per acre, White County ranked third, harvesting 3,200 acres, from 3,700 planted acres, for production of 332,000 bushels.
Tippecanoe County in west-central Indiana averaged 102 bushels per acre on 2,020 harvested acres, from 2,500 planted acres, producing 206,000 bushels of winter wheat.
Winter wheat averaged 100.7 bushels per acre in Hendricks County with 1,360 harvested acres, from 1,800 planted acres, resulting in 137,000 bushels.
Henry County produced 265,000 bushels with an average yield of 100.4 bushels per acre across 2,640 harvested acres, from 3,100 planted acres.
Madison County rounded out the three-digit yield averages with 100 bushels per acre. The central Indiana county’s farmers harvested 1,590 winter wheat acres, from 2,100 planted acres, and produced 159,000 bushels.
Top-Producing Counties
Indiana’s top winter wheat-producer was Posey County at 1.335 million bushels. The southwest Indiana county averaged 86.1 bushels per acre on 15,500 harvested acres, from 16,500 planted acres.
Knox County’s winter wheat averaged a bushel short of 100 per acre to produce 1.089 million bushels across 11,000 harvested acres, from 13,000 planted acres.
Allen County winter wheat growers harvested 10,300 acres, from 12,000 planted acres, averaging 99.6 bushels per acre for a total production of 1.026 million bushels.
Gibson County production reached 937,000 bushels via an 89.2-bushel per acre average from 10,500 harvested acres, from 18,500 planted acres.
Winter wheat production reached 624,000 bushels in De Kalb County with 6,370 harvested acres, from 8,400 planted acres, and an average of 98 bushels per acre.
Rounding out the top six county production total is Jay’s 600,000 bushels. The east-central Indiana county averaged 94.9 bushels per acre across 6,320 harvested acres, from 7,900 planted acres.
