From the Fields: Tight tassel wrap in corn ‘pretty scary for a while’

Wilson and Roy Henert check out the inside of the empty grain bin on their family’s farm near Ashton, Illinois, while playing with their cats. The family is working to complete annual maintenance on the grain handling system with harvest quickly approaching.

We’ve had quite a bit of rain, several inches over the past few weeks. I see some soybean fields that are damaged, but I think that is lack of tile more than excess rain.

We had some tassel wrap, which was pretty scary for a while, but most of ears filled out. It’s not just the new hybrids — it’s also a problem with older hybrids which hasn’t happened in the past.
