From the Fields: Just getting started

Clay Geyer

Spring planting is just getting started, so hopefully we will not see any major breakdowns. I started the year feeling optimistic that my soft red winter wheat crop would’ve weathered the winter cold snap better than it did while it lay dormant. I’m not sure if the thin wheat stand was due to a germination issue or the harsh temperatures without any snow cover.

My original plan was to plant more acres of corn with less soybeans and hay, but after scouting the wheat field, I decided to balance out the corn and soybean acres and broadcast alfalfa and orchardgrass seed with fertilizer over the remaining wheat fields before the wheat was jointed.

My existing fields of hay seem to look OK, but we shall see after first cutting. Maybe I’ll have more corn acres by the end.
