Cheese sculpture unveiled at State Fair

20th anniversary of cheese sculpture tradition

This year’s cheese sculpture includes tributes to Buttercup, the American Dairy Association Indiana mascot, and the Indiana State Fair baseball theme.

INDIANAPOLIS — Renowned cheese artists Sarah Kaufmann and Nancy Baker spent 250 hours designing and creating this year’s cheese sculpture at the Indiana State Fair.

American Dairy Association Indiana unveiled the 1,600-pound masterpiece on Aug. 12. It was created with a mix of cheddar cheeses donated by Kroger’s Pace Dairy in Crawfordsville.

It’s the 20th anniversary of a sculpture being carved at the state fair.

“The annual cheese sculpture is a beloved Indiana State Fair tradition that celebrates Indiana’s dairy farm families while showcasing the extraordinary talent of food artists Sarah Kaufmann, who marks her 20th year creating the sculpture at the fair, alongside Nancy Baker, who has helped bring these creations to life over the past three years,” said Brooke Williams, director of communications for ADAI.

“After seeing this year’s sculpture, we invite fairgoers to continue the dairy experience with a refreshing milkshake or one of our signature grilled cheese sandwiches at the Dairy Bar.”

The sculpture will remain on display at the Ag/Hort Building on the west side of the fairgrounds through the end of the fair on Aug. 23.

After the fair, the sculpture will be transported to BioTown Ag in Reynolds and converted into energy.
