Connection matters: September is Suicide Prevention Month

The AgriStress Helpline — at 833-897-2474 — is a free and confidential crisis and support line that you can call or text 24/7.

COVINGTON, La. — September is Suicide Prevention Month, and much of the education focuses on recognizing warning signs and identifying risk, said Olivia Bury, behavioral health coordinator at AgriSafe.

“Knowledge is important, but prevention is also about understanding what helps people stay connected to life when circumstances become difficult,” Bury said.

“Connection matters. A trusted relationship, feeling understood, having access to meaningful support and having a sense of purpose, belonging and hope can all provide important sources of strength.

“Sometimes, prevention happens before there is a crisis — it happens when people have relationships and resources they can turn to during difficult seasons.”

For farmers, this may look like a neighbor checking in after a difficult harvest or a healthcare provider who understands the nuances of farm life.

“Communities can strengthen prevention by creating spaces for connection, making mental health resources more accessible and helping people know where to turn before they reach a crisis,” Bury said.

“Suicide prevention isn’t only about identifying what puts someone at risk. It is also about strengthening the things that keep people connected to other people, their communities, their purpose and hope.”

A resource for the ag community includes the AgriStress Helpline, which provides free, confidential support 24/7 by call or text.

The helpline connects agricultural communities with trained crisis specialists who understand the unique stressors and challenges associated with life in agriculture.
