FFA reporter shares tips for national convention

Q&A: Jenna Lawler

INDIANAPOLIS — Every year at the National FFA Convention’s opening ceremony, the young leaders are asked, “FFA members, why are you here?”

Each year, thousands respond in unison: “To practice brotherhood, honor agricultural opportunities and responsibilities and develop those qualities of leadership which an FFA member should possess.”

Jenna Lawler, the 2025-2026 Indiana FFA state reporter, gets goose bumps every time.

“I think it’s really special that we can have so many people connected in seconds because of a corduroy jacket,” she said. “It reminds me that I’m more than just my jacket. I am part of something bigger when I go to convention.”

The 98th National FFA Convention & Expo will be held Oct. 29-Nov. 1 in Indianapolis. Lawler shared her story and how she is preparing for the convention with AgriNews.

Q: What are you looking forward to at the National FFA Convention & Expo?

A: Something really special is watching my friends from other states compete. I had the opportunity last year to watch one of my friends from Hawaii compete in creed speaking. That was just a really unique opportunity that I haven’t had elsewhere.

Q: What advice would you have for FFA students attending this convention?

A: I think, first and foremost, just have fun. It’s such a unique experience. There are other organizations that have national conventions, but nothing compares to a National FFA Convention. So, really, just soak in the moment. Embrace the experience. Have fun. Be safe.

As far as like the logistics of how to be prepared, make sure that you bring comfortable shoes, that you’re eating good food, that you’re sleeping when you can and that you, if you’re a lady and you’re wearing a skirt, bring extra nylons with you.

Q: Any other final tips for attendees?

A: A lot of contests at the national convention are open for public viewing, even the preliminary rounds. It was an excellent opportunity for me when I was in my competition era to go and see what it looks like at the national level and see if it was a contest I was interested in competing in. Then also just to go and support my friends.

Being in the preliminary halls and seeing friends and family made me feel so supported. I know that a lot of members would feel the same way knowing that they have people in their corner.
