From the Fields: Completing harvest before the snow falls

The state and national corn-husking competitions are both held in northern Indiana.

The lack of rain leading up to harvest, combined with dry conditions and 80-degree days, really cooked the crops down fast as we approached the first day of October.

I finished baling my fifth-cutting alfalfa and harvesting my soybeans on Oct. 3 and finished sowing wheat on my soybean acres by Oct. 6. I am looking forward to having all the crops harvested before the first flake of snow falls from the sky.

It’s been a couple years in the making, but I am praying for a great day with a cool breeze and plenty of sun Oct. 17-18 during the National Corn Husking Contest. This year is extra special because we hosted not only the state event on Oct. 4, but also the national competition two weeks later.
