From the Fields: Pasture burnt up

Mindy Orschell (center) stands with her family on their farm near Brookville in southeastern Indiana.

At this point most of our soybeans are ready to harvest and hopefully we can begin to cut them next week. We were hoping they would get some moisture on them before harvest, but at this point it seems that Mother Nature has turned off the rain spigot, and if we wait for it to rain, it might be December before we get our crop out.

We did find Mexican bean beetles and had to make another pass with insecticide this year.

Most of our cow-calf pairs are still on pasture. However, the pasture is mostly burnt up, so we are feeding hay daily now.
