Illinois crop progress for week ending May 17

There were 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork in Illinois for the week ending May 17, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 3% very short, 14% short, 72% adequate, and 11% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 3% very short, 17% short, 67% adequate, and 13% surplus.

Corn planted reached 75%, compared to 71% last year, and the five-year average of 73%. Corn emerged reached 46%, compared to 50% last year, and the five-year average of 46%.

Soybeans planted reached 74%, compared to 65% last year, and the five-year average of 63%. Soybeans emerged reached 44%, compared to 42% last year, and the five-year average of 35%.

Winter wheat headed reached 82%, compared to 61% last year, and the five-year average of 75%. Winter wheat condition was rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 20% fair, 59% good, and 14% excellent.

Pasture and range conditions were rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 26% fair, 53% good, and 16% excellent.
