Calendar: Conservation@Home Native Seed and Plant Share

PEKIN, Ill. — The Conservation@Home Native Seed and Plant Share will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at Tazewell County Extension, 1505 Valle Vista Blvd., Pekin.

In addition to increasing their collection of native plants, guests will also network with current Conservation@Home members and Extension staff, learn more about the C@H program, and have the opportunity to begin the certification process for their own property.

Guests are invited to bring:

• Native seeds, labeled.

• Plant starts, labeled with roots properly washed to avoid the spread of any undesirables.

• A dish to share for a potluck meal.

There will be a mushroom costume contest to help showcase upcoming programs. Wear a mushroom print T-shirt or full costume.

Gardening in the Air

URBANA, Ill. — Gardening in the Air!, a free virtual gardening symposium featuring horticulture experts from University of Illinois Extension and Iowa State University Extension, will be 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 18.

Creatures of the Night

FAIRBURY, Ill. — Creatures of the Night will be 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at Fugate Woods Nature Preserve, 23150 E 1000 N Rd, Fairbury.

Explore the fascinating world of nocturnal animals — owls, crickets, moths, raccoons, opossums, and skunks. Also, learn how to calculate the temperature by counting cricket chirps and try your hand at “mothing,” a unique way to observe moths up close as they’re drawn to light in the dark forest.

After the adventure, gather around the fire to roast hot dogs and make s’mores. Share stories, ask questions, and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the woods at night.

Fermented Sauerkraut

EUREKA, Ill. — The Old-World Way: Fermented Sauerkraut will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at Menu 309, 116 N. Main St., Eureka.

In this hands-on class, participants will prepare their own jar of crunchy, tangy kraut to take home and ferment. Along the way, they’ll learn tips and tricks to ferment different types of produce, keeping them bubbly, flavorful, and safe to enjoy. Cabbage used in the workshop will be locally sourced from Pico de Gallo Farm in El Paso.

Fermented Loaf: Sourdough Bread will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6. Uncover the secrets behind turning simple ingredients — flour, water, and salt — into flavorful, crusty loaves, with the help of wild yeasts and bacteria in this hands-on workshop. Participants will gain a better understanding of the entire sourdough breadmaking process, and take home their own jar of sourdough starter to feed, nurture, and bake with for years to come.

Pesticide Applicator Workshops

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Commercial Pesticide Applicator Workshop will be 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET Nov. 19 at the Purdue Fort Wayne Walb Student Union, Union Circle Drive, Fort Wayne.

Topics will include Emergency Prep, Plant and Pest Diagnostic Lab, Office of the Indiana State Chemist Updates, and Weather for Decision-Making.
