Calendar: Corn yield survey in Montgomery County

HILLSBORO, Ill. — Montgomery County Extension will conduct the yearly yield survey of the area corn crop from 8 a.m. to noon, Sept. 4.

Volunteers will form groups to survey fields and estimate yields in each of the 19 townships. The groups will reconvene to compile the data and share results at the Extension office, 1 Industrial Park Drive, Hillsboro. Montgomery County Farm Bureau will provide a complimentary lunch.

Storing Produce

DIXON, Ill. — The program How to Use and Store Fresh Garden Produce will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 23 at the Sauk Valley Community College Greenhouse, 173 IL-2, Dixon.

You have grown fresh produce all summer long, now what do you do with the excess produce like onions, cucumbers and tomatoes? Explore simple ways of storing produce for longer shelf life at this workshop. Also covered will be easy recipes, like refrigerator pickles, to make your produce go further.

Urban Forest

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Gardener’s Role in the Urban Forest: Managing Our Trees for Biodiversity will be 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Bloomington Public Library, 205 E. Olive St., Bloomington.

Edible Plant Walk

NEPAC Field Day

COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. — Purdue Extension in northeast Indiana will host a field day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET Sept. 10 at the Northeast Purdue Agricultural Center, 4821 E. 400 S, Columbia City.

The field day for farmers and agribusiness professionals highlights current agronomic research.

The program will begin with a series of morning workshops led by Purdue Extension experts. Workshop topics and presenters include:

• State pesticide regulation update, James Wolff, Extension educator.

• Corn production update, Dan Quinn, Purdue corn specialist.

• Update on crop diseases, Darcy Telenko, Purdue field crops pathologist.

• A Different Approach to P Management, Megan Bourns, Purdue soil fertility specialist.

• Update on cover crops, Shalamar Armstrong, Purdue agronomist

Following lunch, an optional session will be available on using UAVs to spray pesticides, scout crops, or seed cover crops.

Participants can receive private applicator recertification program credit. Indiana Corn Marketing Council and Indiana Soybean Alliance will be sponsoring the individual $10 fee. Commercial applicator CCHs and Certified Crop Adviser CEUs are also available.

Registration, refreshments and vendor visits will be from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with lunch provided. The optional afternoon session will be from 1 to 2 p.m. or until complete. Admission is free, but registration by Sept. 3 is required to attend and receive a meal.
