Indiana crop progress for week ending May 4

There were 3.8 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending May 4, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, Indiana Field Office.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 2% very short, 5% short, 66% adequate, and 27% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 3% very short, 13% short, 66% adequate, and 18% surplus.

Corn planted reached 26%, compared to 18% last year, and the five-year average of 25%. Corn emerged reached 6%, compared to 5% last year, and the five-year average of 5%.

Soybeans planted reached 25%, compared to 18% last year, and the five-year average of 20%. Soybeans emerged reached 2%, compared to 5% last year, and the five-year average of 3%.

Winter wheat jointing reached 64%, compared to 76% last year, and the five-year average of 69%. Winter wheat headed reached 12%, compared to 21% last year, and the five-year average of 10%. Winter wheat condition was rated 2% very poor, 4% poor, 25% fair, 55% good, and 14% excellent.
