Illinois crop progress for week ending May 4

There were 2.7 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending May 4, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, Heartland Regional Field Office.

Statewide, the average temperature was 59.2 degrees, 2.6 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.29 inches, 0.33 inches above normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 1% very short, 9% short, 53% adequate, and 37% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 2% very short, 14% short, 60% adequate, and 24% surplus.

Corn planted reached 32%, compared to 31% last year, and the five-year average of 44%. Corn emerged reached 8%, compared to 12% last year, and the five-year average of 11%.

Soybeans planted reached 33%, compared to 30% last year, and the five-year average of 34%. Soybeans emerged reached 10%, compared to 11% last year, and the five-year average of 7%.

Winter wheat headed reached 23%, compared to 58% last year, and the five-year average of 31%. Winter wheat condition was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 34% fair, 50% good, and 11% excellent.
