Calendar: Program introduces children to wonders of gardening

SALEM, Ill. — Do you have a child who loves plants or is interested in gardening?

The nine-week Junior Master Gardener class kicks off 4:30 to 6 p.m. May 13 at the Marion County Extension office, 1404 E Main Rte 50 East, Salem.

The Junior Master Gardener program is a hands-on experience that introduces children to the wonders of gardening and environmental stewardship. Designed to inspire a love for nature, this program helps young learners develop essential skills in gardening, plant science and sustainability.

OTTAWA, Ill. — Vegetable Gardening in Raised Beds and Containers will be 6 to 7 p.m. May 8 at Reddick Public Library, 1010 Canal St., Ottawa.

Herb Magic

WELDON, Ill. — Windowsill Wonders: Herb Magic will be 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 9 at Weldon Library, 505 Maple St., Weldon.

Learn how to grow, cut, dry and cook with fresh herbs from your own windowsill. Participants will plant rosemary, basil and dill to take home.

Plant Sale

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Botanical Conservatory Mother’s Day Plant Sale will be 1 to 7 p.m. ET May 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at the McMillen Park Community Center, 3901 Abbott St., Fort Wayne.

The sale will feature over 700 plant varieties, including herbs, annuals, perennials, sun and shade plants, bonsai, hybrid and heirloom vegetables, patio containers, hanging baskets, and Indiana natives. Also available will be potting soil and compost worms.

Wellness Walk

MAYWOOD, Ill. — The Spring Wellness Walk will be 10 a.m. to noon May 10 at Thatcher Woods, 8030 Chicago Ave., Maywood.

Cork Class

Tree ID Walk

CHARLESTON, Ill. — The Tree ID Walk will be 3 to 4:30 p.m. May 13 at the Eastern Illinois University campus in Charleston.

Join Master Naturalist and retired EIU botany professor Nancy Coutant for a leisurely tour around EIU’s campus to view and learn about some of the campus’ unique and common trees and shrubs. The tour will include the 130+-year-old bald cypress grove, the weeping European beech, Harry Lauder’s walking stick shrub, the dawn redwoods (living fossils), and many more interesting trees and shrubs.

Jams and Jellies

SPENCER, Ind. — The Preserve it Now, Enjoy it Later Jams and Jellies Workshop will be noon to 4 p.m. ET May 14 at at Spencer United Methodist Church, 65 N. Montgomery St., Spencer.

OREGON, Ill. — The program Honey and Health: Nature’s Sweet Treat will be 10 to 11 a.m. May 15 at the Oregon Public Library, 300 Jefferson St., Oregon.

Honey is nature’s perfect gift, produced from the nectar of flowers. There are 320 varieties of honey, which vary in color, odor, and flavor depending on local flowers. The popularity of honey has continued to grow over the past decade due in part to its nutritional and therapeutic uses. Livestock Show

MARION, Ill. — The Jackson and Williamson County 4-H Livestock Show will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 17 at the Williamson County Fairgrounds, 101 N. Fair St., Marion.

Scheduled events are Swine Show at 8 a.m., Sheep Show at 9 a.m., Goats Show at 9:30 a.m. and Beef Show at 1 p.m.
