There were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Sept. 22, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Indiana Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 73.1 degrees, 9.1 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.10 inches, 0.59 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 36% very short, 43% short, and 21% adequate. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 32% very short, 45% short, and 23% adequate.

Corn dented reached 95%, compared to 91% last year, and the five-year average of 88%. Corn mature reached 67%, compared to 45% last year, and the five-year average of 45%. Corn harvested for grain reached 12%, compared to 6% last year, and the five-year average of 6%. Corn condition was rated 3% very poor, 7% poor, 29% fair, 48% good, and 13% excellent.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 72%, compared to 57% last year, and the five-year average of 55%. Soybeans harvested reached 16%, compared to 5% last year, and the five-year average of 5%. Soybeans condition was rated 3% very poor, 8% poor, 28% fair, 49% good, and 12% excellent.

Winter wheat planted reached 7%, compared to 5% last year, and the five-year average of 5%.
