There were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Sept. 15, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Indiana Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 69.3 degrees, 1.4 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.22 inches, 0.61 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 32% very short, 46% short, and 22% adequate. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 28% very short, 45% short, and 27% adequate.

Corn dented reached 90%, compared to 81% last year, and the five-year average of 79%. Corn mature reached 48%, compared to 26% last year, and the five-year average of 29%. Corn harvested for grain reached 5%, compared to 1% last year, and the five-year average of 2%. Corn harvested for silage reached 55%, compared to 48% last year, and the five-year average of 48%. Corn condition was rated 3% very poor, 7% poor, 27% fair, 50% good, and 13% excellent.

Soybeans harvested reached 6%, compared to 1% last year, and the five-year average of 1%. Soybeans condition was rated 3% very poor, 7% poor, 27% fair, 51% good, and 12% excellent.

Winter wheat planted reached 3%, compared to 2% last year, and the five-year average of 2%.
