There were 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Sept. 1, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Indiana Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 78.5 degrees, 6.3 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.70 inches, 0.22 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 16% very short, 38% short, 45% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 15% very short, 37% short, 47% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Corn dough reached 89%, compared to 89% last year, and the five-year average of 88%. Corn dented reached 61%, compared to 46% last year, and the five-year average of 48%. Corn mature reached 12%, compared to 3% last year, and the five-year average of 7%. Corn condition was rated 3% very poor, 6% poor, 23% fair, 54% good, and 14% excellent.

Soybeans setting pods reached 94%, compared to 91% last year, and the five-year average of 90%. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 15%, compared to 5% last year, and the five-year average of 7%. Soybeans condition was rated 6% very poor, 6% poor, 23% fair, 54% good, and 14% excellent.
