There were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Aug. 25, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Illinois Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 68.7 degrees, 4.6 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.01 inches, 0.66 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 7% very short, 31% short, 61% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 7% very short, 24% short, 68% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Corn dough reached 92%, compared to 84% last year, and the five-year average of 84%. Corn dented reached 62%, compared to 50% last year, and the five-year average of 47%. Corn mature reached 10%, compared to 5% last year, and the five-year average of 3%. Corn condition was rated 5% very poor, 4% poor, 18% fair, 56% good, and 17% excellent.

Soybeans setting pods reached 93%, compared to 87% last year, and the five-year average of 86%. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 6%. Soybeans condition was rated 4% very poor, 7% poor, 25% fair, 52% good, and 12% excellent.
