Illinois crop progress for the week ending Aug. 20

There were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Aug. 20, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Illinois Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 69.8 degrees, 4.1 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.72 inches, 0.14 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 6% very short, 21% short, 71% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 9% very short, 25% short, 63% adequate, and 3% surplus.

Corn dough reached 80%, compared to the five-year average of 81%. Corn dented reached 39%, equal to the five-year average. Corn mature reached 1%, equal to the five-year average. Corn condition was rated 5% very poor, 9% poor, 22% fair, 55% good, and 9% excellent. Soybeans setting pods reached 86%, compared to the five-year average of 83%. Soybean condition was rated 3% very poor, 9% poor, 23% fair, 54% good, and 11% excellent.
