Calendar: Butterfly Festival June 3 in Pontiac

PONTIAC, Ill. — The Livingston County Butterfly Festival will be 9 to 11 a.m. June 3 at Humiston-Riverside Park, 400 W. Water St., Pontiac.

Activities will include a butterfly release, creating a butterfly feeder, filling a seed ball with pollinators’ favorite flowers, and butterfly yoga.

Head home with newfound knowledge about butterflies, their importance to local environments, and how to create habitat for butterflies at home in your backyard.

Gardening Classes

CARMI, Ill. — Summer Gardening Classes for youths ages 5 and up will be 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. May 30 at the White County GIFT Garden, 603 E. Main St., Carmi.

Children will get hands-on experience in the garden and learn about the fruits and vegetables they are helping to grow.

Shade Gardening

HILLSBORO, Ill. — Shade Gardening will be 3 to 4 p.m. May 30 at the Montgomery County Extension office, 1 Industrial Park Drive, Hillsboro.

Andrew Holsinger, Illinois Extension horticulture educator, will discuss how to increase color and interest in your shade garden with perennials. He will offer tips on soil preparation, light levels, design, planting and maintenance.

Fitting and Grooming Workshop

SALEM, Ind. — Washington County 4-H is hosting a Fitting & Grooming Workshop from 3 to 5 p.m. ET May 31 at the Washington County Fairgrounds, 118 Fair St., Salem. 4-H members in grades 3-12 may choose three sessions to attend from: beef/dairy beef, goats, poultry and rabbits, sheep, and swine. 4-H livestock superintendents, 4-H volunteers and industry experts will demonstrate fitting and grooming practices during each session.

Mini Showmanship Workshop

SALEM, Ind. — Mini 4-H members, grades K-2, who want to show a goat, pig, rabbit, and/or sheep during the Mini 4-H Showmanship Show during the Washington County Fair on June 20 are invited to the Mini Showmanship Workshop, 6 to 7:30 p.m. ET May 31 at the Washington County Fairgrounds, 118 Fair St., Salem.

4-H volunteers and experienced 4-H members will educate mini 4-H participants on the skills and knowledge needed to care for, fit, groom, and show each of the livestock species. Dinner will provided beginning at 5 p.m. All participants must be enrolled in 4-H via v2.4honline.com.

Following the workshop, mini 4-H members have until June 1 to inform the Extension office of the livestock species they intend to show at the fair via the fair entry website. Mini 4-H members do not bring animals to the fair, but are paired with a regular 4-H member and will show the regular member’s animal during the show. Mini 4-H members may request to be paired with a specific regular 4-H member by June 1. Mini 4-H members participating in the show will receive a T-shirt to wear during the show. More detailed information will be shared with registered participants.

Messy Games

EDWARDS, Ill. — Peoria County 4-H Federation is hosting a Messy Games Night from 6 to 8 p.m. June 1 at the Kickapoo Township Hall, 10025 US-150, Edwards.

Federation members ages 13 and up from Fulton, Mason, and Tazewell counties are also invited to attend and get messy. Be sure to wear your “messy clothes.”

Help Desk

TAYLORVILLE, Ill. — The Master Gardener Help Desk will be 9 to 11 a.m. June 1 at the Christian County Extension office, 1120 N. Webster St., Taylorville.

Problems with your yard or garden? Are pests or weeds concerning you? Master gardeners will be available to help you with your gardening questions. If you bring a sample, it should be enclosed in a plastic bag or container and should be fresh to obtain a good diagnosis.

If questions arise at a time the help desk is not open, call 217-287-7246 and leave a message for the master gardeners. They will return your call as soon as possible.

ServSafe Manager Training

VINCENNES, Ind. — Knox County ServSafe manager training and exam will be 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET June 2 at VU Agricultural Center, 4207 N. Purdue Road, Vincennes.

ServSafe Manager Certification satisfies Indiana requirements to become a Certified Food Protection manager.

This event includes training and proctored exam. Anyone choosing the exam only option should arrive at 3 p.m.

Garden Tour

O’FALLON, Ill. — The St. Clair County Garden Tour will be 4 to 8 p.m. June 2, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 3.

Tickets are $12; children 12 and under are free. Your ticket is required at each garden. Garden addresses will be included on your ticket.

Tour the gardens at your leisure, in any order you prefer.

Sheep Show

SALEM, Ind. — The Washington County Sheep Association and Washington County Fair Board are hosting the Open Sheep Show June 3 at the Washington County Fairgrounds Livestock Pavilion, 118 Fair St., Salem.

There are classes for Market Lambs, Breeding Ewes, Rams and Showmanship. Weigh-in is from 8:30 to 10 a.m. ET, with the show starting at 12:30 p.m. with showmanship classes.

The Sheep Association will sell lamb concessions along with chips and drinks beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing until 4 p.m. or the end of the show. Cinnamon rolls and drinks will available for breakfast.

Plant Sale

CARLINVILLE, Ill. — The Macoupin County Master Gardener Plant Sale will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 3 at the Macoupin County Historical Society, 920 W. Breckenridge St., Carlinville.

Shop for perennials, herbs, native plants, hardware, and more while supporting the programs of the Macoupin County master gardeners. There will be many locally raised plants to choose from.

Climate Forum

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The program A Current Look at Climate Change and Water in Indiana: Science and Solutions will be noon ET June 6. The virtual forum will feature speakers from Purdue’s Institute for a Sustainable Future, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and IL-IN Sea Grant.

Discussed will be water resources, climate change resilience and local action in Indiana.
