Calendar: Add color, texture to winter landscape

The winter season can be a dreary time for your landscape. Join University of Illinois Extension’s Good Growing team to learn what plants to use to add color, texture, and plant architecture to your winter landscape, including red and yellow twig dogwood, winterberry, witch hazel, serviceberry, and false cypress.

Tips for keeping a nature journal

Learn techniques for keeping a nature journal in a master naturalist continuing education series webinar from 6 to 7 p.m. CST Dec. 14. Wendy Ferguson, horticulture program coordinator, will provide a look at the role a nature journal plays in the life of a naturalist. Then grab paper and pencil to learn some quick tips and easy techniques to add interest and enhance the sketches in your own journal.

Holiday wreath workshop

CARLINVILLE, Ill. — A holiday wreath workshop will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Macoupin County Extension office, #60 Carlinville Plaza, Carlinville. Get into the holiday spirit and use nature’s bounty to build a beautiful wreath. Natural materials such as fresh evergreens, foliage, pine cones, berries and more will be provided.

4-H Holiday Photo Contest

Enter the Christian, Jersey, Macoupin and Montgomery counties 4-H Holiday B&W Photo Contest by submitting your digital black-and-white holiday photograph by Dec. 17 to Kate Harding at harding@illinois.edu.

Take a picture with a holiday theme. Photos must be in black and white and taken by 4-H member. There are two age groups: 5-7 and 8-18. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place for both age groups. Winning pictures will be displayed on county 4-H Facebook pages.
