Calendar: Learn about herbal teas

THOMSON, Ill. — The program All About Herbal Teas will be at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 9 at the Thomson Public Library, 1005 W. Main St., Thomson.

Master Gardener Nancy Gmitro will share information on growing herbs for herbal tea and participants will be making their own herbal tea bag.

Building resiliency in yourself

The online program Building Resiliency in Yourself and Your Organization will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 9.

Every one of us has been challenged by a tough situation sometime in our lives. We have witnessed highly resilient people that have the ability to adapt, recover, and grow stronger from difficult situations. In this lesson, learn what characteristics resilient people and organizations possess that help them create opportunities from challenges, and how you can also nurture and strengthen your resilience.

Geothermal energy program

Illinois Extension has partnered with the Illinois Geothermal Coalition to develop programs that support wider adoption of geothermal energy systems and disseminate information to decision makers and public stakeholders about the potential economic, energy efficiency, and environmental benefits to the residents of Illinois.

The online program Geothermal Energy: Federal Models in Resiliency and Sustainability, will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 9.

Information in the program may assist decision makers and public stakeholders in identifying how geothermal energy can be implemented successfully in long-term solutions and provide a venue to discuss potential benefits to the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

Invasive and problematic plants

FREEPORT, Ill. — Join University of Illinois Extension Energy and Environmental Stewardship Educator Jay Solomon for the program Invasive and Problematic Plants in the Landscape at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 10, at the Stephenson County Farm Bureau, 210 W. Spring St., Freeport.

Fall is an excellent time to identify and work on controlling many of these plants in our landscapes, timber, and prairie areas. Woody invasive plants such as autumn olive, buckthorn, bush honeysuckle, and multiflora rose are easier to identify and manage this time of year.

Prescribed fire training day

GODFREY, Ill. — The Great Rivers Prescribed Burn Association is partnering with Lewis and Clark College, Illinois Extension Forestry, and the Southern Illinois Prescribed Burn Association to host a free prescribed fire training event from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at Lewis and Clark College, 5800 Godfrey Road, Godfrey.

The focus of this training will be preparing for a prescribed fire and will cover burn plans, firebreak design and creation, pre-fire walk-throughs, hazard tree and snag assessments, types of tools, and equipment and when/how to use them.

Portions of this training will be held outdoors; dress according to the weather. Bring your own drink and snack.
