Calendar: Fall gardening for pollinators

HILLSBORO, Ill. — The program Fall Gardening for Pollinators will be offered online and in-person at 1 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Montgomery County Extension Office, #1 Industrial Park Drive, Hillsboro.

Pollinator plants can grow successfully with careful planning and research. Join Andrew Holsinger, University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator, on how to choose an appropriate location, identify soil and light requirements, and choosing the right plants for your landscape.

Oaktoberfest in Urbana

URBANA, Ill. — Welcome fall with educational family activities at Oaktoberfest from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 16 at Chief Shemauger Park, 1011 E. Kerr Ave., Urbana. Enjoy a day out at the park with master naturalists, master gardeners, 4-H, and educators from U of I Extension and Urbana Park District. Feel the fall vibes and learn about the native trees of Illinois.

Youth activities will include a scavenger hunt, bark and leaf rubbings, tree ring discovery, and paint a tree landscape. Nature yoga, and singing the oak tree song will be at 10 a.m and noon.

Arborists will answer your tree questions, see a demonstration on proper tree planting, and explore tree identification with master gardeners and master naturalists. Tree-planting demonstrations will be at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
