INDIANAPOLIS — Even as agriculture faces ongoing uncertainty around markets, regulations and global demand, companies continue to invest in Indiana — pointing to the state’s strong infrastructure, workforce and location as important advantages to doing business here.
In recent weeks, POET, Elanco and John Deere have each announced expansions and investments across the state.
Here’s a quick look at each one.
Biofuels producer POET to Invest $203M for Shelbyville Expansion
POET, the world’s largest biofuels producer, is investing $203 million for an expansion in Shelbyville.
The company said the project will double the facility’s bioethanol production capacity and add 20 jobs.
The plant’s production will jump from 98 million gallons to 193 million gallons.
“This expansion reflects POET’s confidence in the future of biofuels and our commitment to American agriculture and domestic energy production,” said Jeff Lautt, POET President and COO.
“By growing this facility, we’re strengthening markets for local farmers, creating good-paying rural jobs, and ensuring we can meet the growing global demand for our suite of bioproducts.”
Construction will begin in March 2026 and is expected to be completed in late 2027.

Elanco to expand R&D presence at Indy global headquarters
Elanco announced that it will expand its R&D presence in its new Indianapolis global headquarters and surrounding OneHealth Innovation District, while continuing to invest in its U.S.-based manufacturing footprint.
The company expected to invest $400 million in its U.S. operations, workforce and communities over the next five years.
The combination of a favorable tax environment, regulatory reform resulting in improved timelines for USDA regulatory reviews, and greater certainty on tariffs has created favorable conditions for the continuation of U.S. investments in R&D and manufacturing, while bringing key innovation capabilities from Europe to the U.S., the company stated in a press release.

John Deere to open new facility in Indiana
John Deere is opening two new U.S.-based facilities — a state-of-the-art distribution center near Hebron, Ind., and an excavator factory in Kernersville, North Carolina — both set to open this year.
John Deere will invest $125 million to construct and equip a 1.2 million-square-foot warehouse and distribution center on 234 acres in Lake County near the Lowell-Hebron area.
The distribution center is strategically located to enhance supply chain capabilities nationwide.
An estimated 150 jobs will be created at the new facility.
“Our state’s location as the Crossroads of America makes it the ideal destination for companies of all sizes to serve customers across the U.S. and around the world,” said Gov. Mike Braun.
“John Deere’s expansion to Indiana is a testament to our business-first environment, our robust manufacturing sector, and our strong pipeline of skilled talent.”
