LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Cox Farms enjoyed more grain storage and a more efficient harvest after expanding to a new 125,000-bushel storage bin this fall.
Their expansion includes GSI TopDry, which integrates drying and storage into a single unit for greater efficiency.
They’re also enjoying more efficient conveyers and grain legs, a faster unload system in the wet grain bin and improved capacity with the grain pit unloader. One grain leg that they replaced was almost 50 years old.
“Our biggest goal was to add storage,” said Travis Sheets, grain facility manager at Cox Farms. “The lines going to the elevators have been increasingly getting longer, which makes it harder to get it out of the field. We needed more storage to keep the combine moving as much as we can.”
Their new system helped them unload quicker than previous years.
“It increased our capacity to unload a truck,” Sheets said. “We went from a little under 3,000 bushels an hour to a little over 5,000 bushels an hour.
“Last year, we were running four trucks and barely keeping up. When we were dumping corn at the grain bins, the pit never shut off because it was so slow.
“This year, we got by with three trucks. The pit was shutting off for several minutes between each truck.”
This system will primarily be used for corn, but is able to handle wheat and soybeans.
