From the Fields: End in sight

Another great week to be in the field working on harvest. We are down to around 250 acres of corn left to combine for 2021. I’m hearing of folks around the area that finished up this week. It’s surprising how many beans are still out there to be harvested. Hopefully with a warm-up this coming week into the upper 60s and even into the 70s the last of the beans in the fields get knocked out and even more finish up with harvest completely.

We were able to get our last fields of cover crop rye seeded early this week. We have a few experiments going on with application to see what works the best. All was applied with fertilizer for carrier by Stephenson Service Company. Some of the ground we had worked beforehand. Of that ground we cultimulched in a portion and lightly soil finished in a portion. Another field we had it spread on bean ground then lightly soil finished it in and the last field we didn’t do anything after the seed was spread on. With a little light rain and the higher temps this week we hope it gets a good start and we will see what happens in the spring.

Fall fertilizer, lime and anhydrous ammonia applications are in full swing along with fall tillage. We hope to get some fall strip-till anhydrous on to be a step ahead of the game come next spring when it’s time to plant. One good thing about a drier year and fall up here is that there should be less compaction and ruts from the harvest passes, getting the crops out of the field.

Congratulations to the local high school football teams that have made playoffs. It has been fun listening to your progress while in the field. There are a few local teams from up here still in the hunt for the state championship. It will be fun listening in the combine or tractor to the games and cheering them on.
