Illinois, Iowa add soybean acres, Indiana unchanged

WASHINGTON — A little less corn and a tad more soybeans is being seen across the “I” state landscape this growing season.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its planted acres report June 30 that included corn, soybeans and winter wheat estimates.

Illinois

The corn planted area of 11.2 million acres is down 1% from last year’s 11.3 million acres. The harvested area for grain is anticipated to be 11 million acres compared to 11.1 million in 2020.

The survey-based report has Prairie State soybean planted area of 10.7 million acres, a 4% increase over 2020′s 10.3 million. Harvested area, forecast at 10.65 million acres, is up 4% from the previous year’s 10.25 million.

Winter wheat planted area for 2021 is estimated at 700,000 acres, 23% above 2020′s 570,000 acres. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 650,000 acres, up 25% from the 520,000 acres a year ago.

Indiana

Hoosier State farmers planted 5.40 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2021, unchanged from last year. Corn acreage expected to be harvested for grain totaled 5.25 million acres, also unchanged from last year.

Soybean acreage planted or to be planted for all purposes in Indiana is estimated at 5.70 million acres, matching last year. Soybean acreage for harvest is expected to total 5.69 million acres, up fractionally from 5.68 million a year earlier.

Winter wheat planted acres of 380,000 in Indiana are 27% higher than in 2020′s 300,000. Area expected to be harvested for grain, at 300,000 acres, is up 20% from last year’s 250,000.

Iowa

Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 13.1 million acres, down 500,000 acres from 2020. Corn to be harvested for grain is forecast at 12.65 million acres compared to 12.9 million last year.

Soybean acreage planted is expected to be 9.90 million acres, up 500,000 acres from the 2020 planted acreage. Soybean acreage to be harvested is projected at 9.82 million acres compared to 9.32 million a year ago.

Nationwide

Corn planted area for all purposes in 2021 is estimated at 92.7 million acres, up 2% or 1.87 million acres from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is expected to be up or unchanged in 28 of the 48 estimating states. Area harvested for grain, at 84.5 million acres, is 2% higher than last year’s 82.467 million.

U.S. soybean planted area for 2021 is projected at 87.555 million acres, up 5% from the 83.084 million last year. The harvested soybean area is estimated at 86.72 million acres. Compared with last year, planted acreage is up or unchanged in 28 of the 29 estimating states.

The 2021 winter wheat planted area in the United States is 33.7 million acres, is up 11% from last year and 2% higher than the previous estimate. Of this total, about 23.6 million acres are hard red winter, 6.59 million acres are soft red winter and 3.50 million acres are white winter.

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service noted that the estimates are based on data provided by respondents who were contacted between May 29 and June 17. It was estimated during that time frame 2.18 million acres of corn and 9.84 million soybean acres were left to be planted.
