Indiana 4R certification program launches

INDIANAPOLIS — The Agribusiness Council of Indiana celebrated the launch of the state’s 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program on Nov. 20.

The voluntary program encourages agricultural retailers and independent crop consultants to adopt proven best practices through the 4Rs: using the right source of nutrients, at the right rate, and right time, in the right place.

The commitment is an effort to improve water quality in the long run.

“Agribusiness Council of Indiana spent three years researching ways to implement a 4R program in Indiana, and we’re so excited to officially launch,” said ACI President Amy Cornell.

“As the proactive voice of businesses serving Indiana agriculture, we felt that it was important to offer our members — the trusted advisers helping farmers make in-field decisions — with new tools to help those farmers achieve their production goals.”

Gov. Eric Holcomb lauded the program and those involved with establishing it.

“Congratulations to ACI for launching this voluntary, sustainable 4R certification program,” he said. “Your proactive approach will provide Hoosier farmers with nutrient management options that will improve resiliency while protecting Indiana waters and provide science-based recommendations and best practices tailored to meet individual needs.”

The 4R concept started in the late 1980s. The fertilizer industry and scientific community came together in an effort to improve the ag industry’s sustainability.

“Use of 4R practices drive forward our vision of Indiana farmers staying at the forefront of nutrient management practices that improve their farm viability, and ultimately reduce nutrient loss to water,” said Ben Wicker, executive director of the Indiana Agriculture Nutrient Alliance.

“The principles of 4R nutrient management are foundational to our mission of healthy soils, clean water and viable farms.”

Indiana began work towards a 4R certification program in 2017, with formation of the 4R steering committee.

“In 2020, the Agribusiness Council of Indiana and the Indiana Agriculture Nutrient Alliance partnered with the 4R steering committee to dive into drafting Indiana 4R certification standards,” Wicker explained.

Now, Indiana is the first “I” state to adopt the program.

An upcoming webinar Dec. 7 will highlight the certification process and other details. For more information, visit www.inagribiz.org/4r-launch-celebration.
