Langreck: The golden rule

Besides the golden rule of treating others as you want to be treated, I have one rule that I stick to all the time, which is to not discuss politics at the workplace or out in public — and I refuse to bend my stance on this rule.

I learned early on that discussing politics can cause a divide and put a wedge between close friends and even family members. Every single individual is entitled to their own opinion and I will never deny a person’s right to vote and make their own decisions.

The issue I have is that many Americans seem to have lost the sense of pride and duty to their country that is attached with the right to vote.

I am not saying that individuals don’t have the right to support their candidate and get involved because that is their civic right to do so, if they please. I am just urging people to remember that everyone is human and entitled to their opinion, but a little humanity can go a long way.

So, maybe instead of talking about politics at your next get-together, you can talk about Big Ten football or the couple to beat on “Dancing with the Stars.”

Just remember everyone has the freedom to support who they want, but arguing about it is not the best way to go about things.
