AquaBounty plans new salmon farm in Kentucky

MAYFIELD, Ky. — AquaBounty Technologies announced that Mayfield has been selected as the potential site for the land-based aquaculture company’s third farm to raise salmon.

The planned 10,000-metric-ton salmon farm would be the largest commercial facility for the company. It is expected to be operational in 2023.

“We now are negotiating details of the potential purchase, conducting due diligence and are moving forward as quickly as possible to finalize the transaction,” said Sylvia Wulf, CEO of AquaBounty.

“This milestone positions AquaBounty to rapidly expand our geographic footprint and meet our long-term production goals, creating value for our shareholders.”

The company searched nationwide for the site.

Evaluation criteria included sufficient water and wastewater volumes, low electricity rates, proximity to major population centers, availability of skilled labor pools, and a stable, supportive political environment.

Construction is expected to begin in 2021. The facility will bring an estimated 70 to 90 new jobs to the region.

The farm will be about eight times the size of the current farm in Albany, Indiana, which has a 1,200 metric ton annual production capacity.

The Indiana farm commenced its first harvest of conventional Atlantic salmon at the end of June 2020.

The first harvest of genetically engineered salmon from Indiana is expected in the fourth quarter of 2020.
