Funding will train truck drivers

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A $573,000 grant for an eastern Kentucky technical college will be used to train semi truck drivers in the region.

The grant for Hazard Community and Technical College is from the Appalachian Regional Commission, the governor’s office announced.

The program will annually train a total of 150 students for their commercial driver’s license at the Hazard and Leslie County campuses.

The grant will cover the purchase of two new trucks and trailers and salaries for one full-time instructor and four part-time teachers.

Department of Local Government Commissioner Dennis Keene said CDL licenses are in high demand in the region.

In addition to ARC funds, local sources will provide $143,146, making the total project funding $715,729.
