From the Fields: How sweet it is

Everyone is trying to soak up the last few weeks we have left of summer. School starts soon for a lot of the local schools and the days are starting to get shorter. The LaPorte FFA just finished up their officer retreat at Potato Creek State Park where the officers set goals and planned out their entire year for our FFA chapter. This is something new officers look forward to as this is their first big task as leaders of the chapter. After hearing all their plans and how much they bonded over our two-day camping trip, I am really excited to see what they accomplish this year.

The Indiana State Fair has officially kicked off. Not only do you have all the delicious fair food and animals to look forward to seeing there, the Budweiser Clydesdales are there, as well. We were lucky enough to host them at the LaPorte County Fair this summer. These are some of my favorite animals just because of their size. They are so big and majestic looking. It’s unreal. You can’t forget about the adorable Dalmatian that rides on the wagon, as well. Definitely something that should be on your bucket list.

Weather wise, we have finally got some much needed rain this past week. The weather prior was great with cooler temperatures and very little humidity, but the crops were in desperate need of some water. This allowed a lot of the locally grown sweet corn to be ready for harvest. Sweet corn is finally back in season and has become a staple at every dinner now. I always look forward to this time of year and getting to enjoy the fresh sweet corn picked just minutes before you eat it. I mean do you really live in the Midwest, though, if you don’t eat your body weight in sweet corn at least once a year?
