GILLIAM, La. (AP) — A Louisiana cattleman was arrested June 22 on animal cruelty charges after more than 250 starving cattle were found on land he leased, Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator said in a news release.
Tremecius Mondell Dixon, 49, of Shreveport, was arrested on four counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator said in a news release.
He said deputies were asked to check the herd's condition, and a deputy and livestock agent found the animals were malnourished, on overgrazed land without an adequate water supply.
At least 10 were dead and a veterinarian found the rest “in severely poor condition,” the news release said.
The cattle were near Gilliam, a village about 22 miles north of Shreveport.
Dixon's bond was set at $25,000.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick said she did not know whether he had an attorney who could speak for him.
