A relatively dry week did little to improve crop conditions and furthered concern for crop development as fall approaches, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office.
Below-average precipitation, with only sporadic rainfall, caused soil moisture levels to decrease slightly. The average temperature for the week was 68.1 degrees, 1.8 degrees below normal for the state. The amount of rainfall varied from none to 1.44 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was 0.23 inches. There were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sept. 8.

Corn and soybean conditions remained stable last week, and farmers continued to prepare for harvest as summer started to wind down. Seed corn harvest began in some areas over the last week. Commercial tomato harvest also was underway, and mint harvest had all but wrapped up. The dry weather aided with hay harvest. Livestock added weight and enjoyed the pasture growth resulting from the previous week’s rains.
Other activities for the week included tobacco harvest, tillage, planting cover crops, and mowing roadsides.
