It’s muggy and hot, and the trees are heavy with leaves. We are in the midst of summer, and it’s encouraging to see corn and soybeans popping up in Indiana fields — even if they are way behind normal progress.

Even though it’s been a stressful year, I hope my farmer friends remember to take time to enjoy this time of year. I hope they can squeeze in a barbecue, an evening at the pool, or a big glass of pink lemonade.

So many things in row crop farming are out of the farmer’s control. But taking time to take care of themselves, and just enjoy summer, is something they can do.

This is just a friendly reminder to crank up the AC and get yourself a big scoop of ice cream. It won’t be long before fall is here and life will get even more hectic on the farm.

And, most importantly, no matter what you’re doing this summer, stay safe.
