Ag leaders participate in 4R program launch

INDIANAPOLIS — Some of Indiana’s top agriculture and state leaders participated in the 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program virtual launch Nov. 20.

Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch said the 4R certification program is about applying the right source of nutrients, at the right rate, the right time and in the right place.

“It helps farmers from putting too much nutrients on their fields,” said Crouch, who added it is an extremely important program because at the end of the day it’s important to maximize farm production while making sure to keep the environment safe at the same time.

Bruce Kettler, director of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, said the 4R certification program, which was made possible with the help and donations from several agriculture groups and businesses, is based upon science, which can help tell a farmer how to utilize the 4Rs in the right way according to what crop they have in the field.

Kettler said it is important to remember that each individual farmer’s needs, yields and goals vary and this certification program allows farmers to meet the nutrient goals, as well as goals in general, they may have for their operation.

“This is a voluntary program, and we realize one size doesn’t fit all,” Crouch said, adding that every farmer has different needs in their fields and the 4R program will help them to save on expenses by applying the right amount of nutrient needed, while also helping to stop runoff, which ultimately helps improve water quality in the state.

Kettler said the virtual program started with educating individuals about what the 4R certification program is and laying strong groundwork for how the program can help farmers, as well as nutrient dealers.

Kettler said the second virtual program on Dec. 7 will provide an overview of who is involved in the program and how an individual could get certified if they aren’t already involved in the 4R certification program.
